Updating Fanatec firmware on a Mac
The short answer: today you cannot, not without a Windows PC somewhere in the chain. Fanatec builds its firmware updater for Windows only, and none of the usual Mac workarounds carry USB through to the base. This page explains exactly why each one fails, what your realistic options are right now, and what we are building to remove the requirement.
Why the obvious workarounds fail
Boot Camp
Boot Camp exists only on Intel Macs. If your Mac has an M1, M2, M3 or M4 chip, Boot Camp is not available at all, and Apple has not replaced it. For most people buying a Mac today this option simply does not exist.
Parallels and other virtual machines on Apple silicon
On an Apple silicon Mac, Parallels and its competitors run Windows 11 on ARM. That version of Windows can emulate x86 applications perfectly well, which is why so much Windows software appears to work. Drivers are different. A kernel-mode driver has to be compiled for the processor architecture the kernel is running on, and Fanatec has never shipped an ARM build of its driver. The installer runs, the driver does not load, and the base never gets claimed.
Emulating an x86 PC instead
You can emulate a full x86 machine on Apple silicon rather than virtualise ARM, but then you hit the other half of the problem: USB passthrough is not supported in that mode. Even with the driver installed, the emulated Windows never sees a wheel base plugged into your Mac.
A cloud PC or remote desktop
A Windows machine in a data centre cannot see a USB device plugged into your desk. Firmware flashing needs a live, low-latency USB connection to the base throughout, so remote desktop and cloud gaming services are not a route either.
What actually works today
- Borrow a Windows PC. Any cheap x86 laptop will do. The updater is not demanding, and you only need it when Fanatec publishes new firmware, which is a few times a year rather than weekly.
- Keep an old Intel Mac around. If you still have one, Boot Camp on it remains a legitimate path.
- Ask in a local sim racing group. Updating takes minutes once the machine is in front of you, and it is a one visit per release problem, not an ongoing one.
None of these are good answers. They are just the honest ones.

That is weeks of work and a Windows machine bought purely to study.
